For me consciousness is just a functional concept. A meta representation of one's world representation. A recursion process somewhere in the brain. Is it fundamental in that it is a recent step in the construction of intelligence.
Consciousness and other words like it should not be used in science because is has almost no material evidence. The one I like is Libet famous experiment.
